Mouse button

Runs the macro when you press an extra mouse button, such as the middle button or a side button.

Mouse button button is pressed

Details #

Fires when you press one of the extra mouse buttons. button is the button's number: 3 is the middle button, and 4 and 5 are the usual side buttons. The left and right buttons (1 and 2) cannot start a macro.

The press is swallowed, so the app under the pointer does not see it, but only when a macro in scope is listening for that button. Any other button, and every button when no macro listens, goes through as normal. The button coming back up is swallowed too, so the app never sees half a click.

The trigger needs the Input Monitoring permission, the same as hotkeys. It is not held back by secure input.

The tilt parameter (a wheel tilt direction) can be stored, but nothing listens for wheel tilts, so it never fires.

Parameters #

ParameterTypeRequiredValuesWhat it does
buttontextThe button number as text, such as "3" for the middle button.
tilttextWheel tilt direction. Stored, but never fires.

Every trigger also takes Limits: a cooldown, the first time each day, every nth time, twice within seconds, a chance, only while you are at the Mac, on one Mac, or in a State. See Limits on any trigger.

Examples #

Middle button
When
  1. Mouse button 3 is pressed
Do
  1. Show “Middle click”
Open in Switchboard to try it

Gotchas #

  • Because the press is swallowed, a macro on the middle button stops middle-click (open in a new tab, paste on some systems) from working while it is enabled.
