Apps, web APIs and command-line tools in the step picker

Switchboard reads what your apps, web services and command-line tools say they can do and turns each action into a step with its own form. They sit in the same picker as the built-in steps, and the palette finds them too. An app appears on its own only if it has Shortcuts actions; a web API or a command-line tool you add yourself.

What it does

  1. You install an app that has Shortcuts actions.

Its actions appear in the Apps section of the Add step picker as soon as it is installed. Each reads as a sentence with a field per parameter, and the palette lists them too, as “Day › Complete to-do”. The app does nothing to make this happen.

  2. You want to file a Linear issue from the clipboard.

Run switchboard api add https://api.linear.app/graphql --graphql --name linear. Every query and mutation becomes a step with a form. Store the key in the Keychain with the Key… button; it is added to each request and never appears in a trace.

  3. You live in the GitHub command line.

switchboard cli add gh reads gh --help and the help for each subcommand, then shows you what it found. Save the steps and cli.gh.pr.list is a step with a checkbox per switch and a field per option. It runs the tool directly, never through a shell.

  4. A small program of your own runs on localhost:8000.

Add its openapi.json address and each endpoint is a step with a form built from the operation’s parameters. When the API changes, switchboard api refresh marks the steps whose operation vanished, so they don’t fail quietly.

  5. A pull request goes red and you want to hear about it.

Add the MCP server in Settings › Agents, choose “An MCP resource changes”, and write the filter json.state == “failed”. The macro runs when the server reports the change, or on a minute’s poll if the server cannot push.

How it works

  1. Apps with Shortcuts actions appear on their own. For a web API or a command-line tool choose Window › Imported Steps (⌘5) and Add.
  2. Read what Switchboard found. Nothing is saved until you press Save Steps, or pass --yes in Terminal.
  3. Use the steps in macros, in the palette and in conditions. Agents see only the apps and imports you allow in Settings › Agents.
