Conditions as triggers

Switchboard can check the front app, a window title, the network, the battery, a file, an element on screen, a variable or a script, and it can watch any of them, so the change itself is the trigger. Give a situation a name and it becomes a State, and whole groups of macros can be scoped to it.

A macro whose When row is “battery drops below 20%”, named “Low battery: plug in”, open in the editor

What it does

  1. Your laptop is on battery and drops below 20%.

A macro runs once, after the change has lasted two seconds. The same edge then rests for ten seconds, so a battery that flaps does not run it in a burst. Starting Switchboard with a low battery does not run it.

  2. A Zoom call ends.

“Zoom is running” becoming false is a trigger of its own. It can restore your volume and show a HUD when the call ends.

  3. Xcode is in front and Zoom is not running. That is Deep work.

Name it a State and you can run one macro when it starts and another when it ends. It gets a dot in the menu bar, and you can force it on for an hour when you’re in Deep work although Xcode isn’t in front.

  4. Your review hotkeys should only exist while you review.

Scope the group to the State Reviewing. Its hotkeys work only while the State is on, and when it is off the keys fall through to the app, never swallowed.

  5. “Run Back up when I am home and on power, but not after Friday.”

Run a macro later parks the run until the condition has held for a moment. Parked runs survive a restart, and Activity lists them under Waiting with Cancel and Run now.

How it works

  1. Add the trigger A condition becomes true, pick a condition, or build a State in the sidebar under Library.
  2. Choose when it counts: becomes true, stops being true, or either. Use A value changes for a number, which is not a yes or no.
  3. Use a State four ways: as a trigger, as a condition, as a value like {{state.deepwork}}, or as the scope of a group.
